The previous task gave me the basis for this task, in order to make good use of the Xenotheka digital library, I thought about which themes stood out in my book “Le Theatre de l’Art de Charpentier”. As I found out in the second assignment, it is about the art of the carpenter. The wooden constructions, for example of church roofs, are an important chapter of the book. So I approached the main topics of the book, so I looked up these topics in Alice. Many suggestions came up under the search term “the art of carpentry”, which I entered first. Further, I searched for hits which were suggested when I searched for the wooden constructions. However, this is a broad term, various books of wooden constructions of bridges and buildings were suggested. I read through these suggestions and looked for the books that fit with my search suggestions. I noticed that the importance of wooden constructions varied depending on the age, so it was more important in the past. The importance also varied depending on the region, whether the occurrence of forests was high there
When I entered the search terms, the book “Serlio, Sebastiano Serlio on Architecture Volume 1” was suggested to me, when I delved into this book, the similarities became clearer. It also deals with the rules of construction, especially geometries and perspectives. Serlio focused mainly on classical design, taking into account the architectural order of proposition and form. His beautiful woodcut illustrations are reproduced in this edition. This book also includes an introduction, commentary, and glossary of terms.
“On the Art of Building in Ten Books”, by Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472) is the second book I chose. This book was the first modern treatise on the theory and practice of architecture, therefore it’s similar to my book. Its importance for the subsequent history of architecture especially of the construction is incalculable. The book addresses various topics, including timber construction. These form the basis for the construction and thus provide support.
