FRIENDS WITH AN OLD BOOK

Xenotheka_270

Posted on 03/25/202205/09/2022

My book is called the Ruins of the palace of the Emperor Diocletian at Spalatro in Dalmatia, it was published in 1764 and written by Robert Adam in English.

The book is about the reconstruction of the ruins that the Emperor Diocletian built and the project was executed by the author himself, he published the book to share his work to the public.

The first thing I did was go to the Xenotheka and look up my book, the description talks about how the work of the author and architect was inspired by the work of, Antoine Desgodetz. I directly went to the search engine “Alice” and typed architecture as conversation topic and asked Alice about Antoine Desgodetz. However no search came up. So I decided to change the conversation topic to Diocletian and asked Alice about ruins and Spalatro. In both searches, the book Cicero, On Old Age On Friendship On Divination appeared, so I decided to take a look at the Xenotheka. It is about Cicero, a roman lawyer, Politician and philosopher that had a huge influence during the time of the Emperor Diocletian. He was known for the speeches he made to fight the rights of the community and therefore brought people together. The architect had to take into consideration how to rebuild the ruins to be able to bring the community together.

I then changed the topic to emperor and asked Alice about Diocletian. I came upon a book called “Justinian, The Codex» and it basically describes the codex (laws) there were during the roman empire, written by the different emperors. This might have nothing to do with my book directly, but I believe that the architect was hugely influenced by the codex at the time. Not just by the laws at the time but also as how the he had to reconstruct the ruins according to the constitution and the way people behaved under the empire.
