DE PICTURA, Leon Battista Alberti
Leon Battista Alberti’s treatis “De Pictura” (italian: “Della Pittura”) is one of three treatises about art, the other two being “De Statua” and “De Re Aedificatoria” . It discusses ther art of painting in 3 chapters (called liber). The text is printed on a single column with the title DE PICTURA centered in the middle of the upper line on the left page in capital letters and a slightly larger font, while the chapter (LIBER I,II,III respectively) is written above centered in the line, also written in only a slighty larger font and in capital letters on the right page. The page numbers are on the same line as the title/chapter on the outer side of the page. In the version I was able to have a look at, the book mostly consisted of prose text, with no text related drawings whatsoever. The only images to be found are on the beginning of the various book, contained in the version I was able to look at, which contained several other texts aswell. On the outer side of the prosa text, certain words or word combinations of the text are highlighted by having them written out in this column as to be able to find the word in the prose text more easily.
The font used in the book is characterised by it containing serifs in the titles and in the prose text. Another characteristic of the font is it’s use of combining certain letters such as the old S “ſ” combined with i, “ſi”, or the combination of “t” and “o”. as in “Signatos”.
