FRIENDS WITH AN OLD BOOK

Regola delli cinque ordini d’architettura – Vignola - Archived

Posted on 11/17/202009/13/2021

Those two pages, captured my attention because of the similarity and at the same time differences those two pages show.

Both pages show two columns with an arch and various details. The big difference which can be noticed is the placing of the text. On page X it is placed in the middle of the drawing, on the other page the text is beneath the drawing, what seems to be more common.

If you look closely you can see that the left page could be a zoom-in of the left pages drawing. Which could be an explanation why Vignola chose such a placing.

One picture is definitely the detail of the other one. The question is, does the detail even show more detail? Does it give the viewer more information?
Page XXX and XXXI stand out in Vignolas book. The contrast in itself but also to the whole book. On the left side is shown two wonderful extremely detaield columns. You understand what Vignola wants to show. In contrast to the second page; What does it show? Is he talking about the static or how a column has to be built?
