As I can only guess the real purpose of the book and the intentions of the author, due to my limited understanding of the French language; I am making an attempt to give you three select spreads from the book to give you an idea of my humble understanding of this work.
The book dates back to 1674, so it was written in baroque France during the reign of Louis XIV and therefore also during the time of the work of Marquis de Vauban who was one of the most renowned master-builders of fortifications.
The author states at the end of the preface that this book is addressed to the young noblesse in military service to give them a compact but detailed overview of the art of designing fortifications. He achieves this by describing the various aspects of the matter, including an introduction into the theme by first giving an array of definitions and principles of fortifications, more detailed remarks about the various orders and also the manual how to attack them.
