McAfee has been in the field of antivirus for quite a while. The company was founded in 1988. It is known for its firewalls, antispam solutions, file encryption, and public key infrastructure. It is most well-known for its anti-virus and has a strong foothold on the market. Security suites offer complete protection against malware and viruses and are backed by a $1,000,000 guarantee to protect against identity theft.
All McAfee plans include a full feature malware scanner that can stop the entry of malware into a system and kill or eliminate any viruses already inside. The real-time protection engine of McAfee blocks malware-related files from downloading. It also reroutes and decrypts data to ensure that your online activities can’t be accessed and used against you.
During our tests, McAfee regularly received top marks in tests of AV Test’s 0-day test as well as our malware protection test. It also scored well on our privacy tests, scoring 100 percent in each of those categories.
The interface is clear and simple to navigate. Accessing features like parental controls and identity theft protections is a bit of a hassle, though. They’re separated into distinct menus on the dashboard. Support is also a bit difficult to obtain. The McAfee Community Forum is active however Techmaster Concierge will be required to help you with more complicated issues.
The biggest disappointment was that the McAfee system scan did not clean up some junk files we had on our test systems. It doesn’t permit users to drag and drop files or folder into the suite to scan it as do many other competitors. This is a major omission in a security suite at this price.
