For the “Friends with an old book” project I was given “Scelta di architettura antiche e moderne della città di Firenze” by Ferdinando Ruggieri, which focuses on the architecture of Florence. On the first page of the book there is a detailed drawing of “Studio dàrchitettura civile” with a number of workers and architects underneath it. After that you are left with the first and only text you see in the book, the index and prologue. Before the context page, there is a detailed illustration of the map of the city. The rest of the book mostly consists of architectural drawings of the buildings in the city. There are drawings of windows, floor plans, columns, stairs etc . The illustrations of the small parts of the buildings (such as stairs and windows) include notes underneath them with more illustrations of the object from each side. The book originally consists of five sections within four volumes, but there were only two volumes in the library. Each volume has a 30 mm height, 480 mm breadth and 370 mm width. But if we were to analyse the book’s size in accordance to the traditional standard format, the fold symbol would be fo. or f° with the name “Folio” and the size letter would be F. Due to the structure of the books, they mostly consist of illustrations, so in some sections the number of pages are the same with the number of illustrations. With all the sections combined the books are in total 318 pages long with 187 illustrations.
