General subject of the book
The book Nouvelle maniere de fortifier les places written by Johann Heinrich von Landsberg, shows new ways to fortify squares, which demonstrate mistakes, that are found in constructions by the most famous modern engineers. It also shows easy ways to correct mistakes in all the parts of the fortifications.
Organisation of the book
The book has no clear order. An organisation in several chapters is missing. Between the two covers we firstly find a whole page on which we see title, that is pretty long. In addition we find a short index of the content. There are no chapters in this book, but there is an index showing on what pages in the book you can find the thoughts, that are being discussed. The layout itself doesn’t give us a hint, where a thought is finished and when a new one begins. For me the most interesting parts are the illustrations. We can find them folded in the book. To have a closer look at them we have to unfold them. They then reach double the size of the book. That is a smart way to allow the author to place more detailed illustrations in a small book. The benefit of this is that it’s still simple to carry, without having to compromise on the significance of the illustrations.
Total number of pages and illustrations
