General subject of the book:

L’ Art universel des fortifications, françoises, holandoises, espagnoles, italiennes, et composées was written by Jean du Breuil in 1665 and the general subject is fortification. More specifically he explains the art of attacking fortified places by surprise and by force, and also how to defend fortified places against surprise and force. He particulary writes about french, dutch, spanish and italian fortifications.

Organisation of the book:

The book starts with an introduction over 10 pages (“Préface“). Followed by a table of practice (“Table des Pratiques: Traités I-IV“) and an extract for the king (“Extrait du Privilege du Roy“). The book is divided into six parts:

“Traité I : Les Definitions, les Noms, les Termes et les Figures”

“Traité II: Ou font données diverfes Methodes pour fortifier toute Figure reguliere à la Françoife, à la Holandaife, à l’Espagnole, et à l’Italienne.”

“Traité III: Ou font données les Methodes de fortifier toutes fortes de Places Regulieres-Irregulieres, comme font les Triangles, et celles qui font en tout Irregulieres.”

“Traité IV: Qui donne la Methode pour élever les Plans des Fortifications, et les faire paroiftre fur le papier, comme elles font en effet fur la terre.”

“Traité V: L’Art d’attaquer les places fortifiées, par les surprises et par la force.”

“Traité VI: L’Art de defendre les places fortifiées, contre les surprises et contre la force.”

It ends with another table of practice. (Table des Pratiques contenues dans les Traitez V et VI)

Size of the book:

The book measures 266mm x 196mm x 30mm, which makes it a in-quarto according to the traditional standard format. The cover is made out of leader. It weighs 104 gramms.

Total number of pages and total number of illustrations:

The total number of pages is 361 and it has 131 illustrations. In the main part of the book most of the time a page of text is followed by an illustration.
