Visualization
media – combination – synthesis
As we can immediately find out in the title, the book is a translation of Vitruvius ten books. With the knowledge that has been conveyed to me since last September, Daniele Barbaro translated one of the most important documents about architecture. I don`t want to make the translation my concept, let’s take a look at the content.
Observing task 2 and the pages of my book, the act of analyzing immediately pops up in my mind. Words and drawings in combination propose a way to understand things. Observe, write, draw – put it together. De architectura libri decem is about clear statements, conveying knowledge and opinions. So how`s that made visual?
The use of different media offers opportunity to look at the same thing differently. Readers of my book encounter drawings and words. All kinds of drawings that possess the claim to analyze and visualize architecture; sections, floor plans, details, elevations, situations. The words that form texts next to the drawings function as mediators between drawings and reader. I don`t want to rate anything, means I see the drawings equal a mediator between texts and reader. It`s about decision, selection and combination of different media to force an optimal and most likely easy way to transport information. What pops up in my mind, when I am looking at something? How do I make these thoughts visual for others? We don`t necessarily need a drawing to have a picture in our head when it`s described and reversely the same.
Deciding which media should be taken to convey a certain analysis or observation doesn`t mean that we are always looking at one problem with only one media. Mostly and that`s the interesting part, the range of opportunities of media is used in combination. Different media function like a mutual replenishment. Texts replenish drawings, drawings replenish texts. They are talking about the same thing differently in their own, best way. This offers the reader the opportunity to experience a e.g. building with different senses, just like in reality. The media function like different senses, that`s what I am imagining with this thought. And of course, as we know, experiencing something with more than one sense makes it more clear, more 3D, more understandable.
After deciding, which medium in what combination with other media to describe and analyse something should be applied, the reader makes a synthesis. The reader filters what he has become fed and synthesis it to what we call knowledge. The better the analysis and the use of media in combination is made, the more visual and clear becomes the information for the reader.
