Title of the concept : The Movement
Our book entitled “newes itinerarium italiae”, written by Furttenach in the 17th century, describes the author’s journey through Italy and offers an analysis of various aspects, both architectural and geographical. Several drawings, analyses and plans are proposed in this first work published by the author in 1627.
This concept can be found in different forms throughout the book. The first aspect of movement, travel, is also the one at the basis of this book as described before, presenting the author’s itinerary throughout its pages. Whether by means of maps or texts, it is possible to follow Furttenbach’s movement around Italy in Newes Itinerarium Italiae. This movement can also be seen in the diversity of the content, ranging from a description of a route to an analysis of plans and constructions around naval engineering. Another aspect that can be cited in which this concept can be felt is the written form of the text; this one with numerous annotations and comments in the margins once again allows a certain movement to be perceived by breaking the regularity of a usual description.
The fact that the author left his home at the age of 15 in order to travel could lead us to the hypothesis of a restless childhood/youth, which in fact would lead us to the origin of this presence of movement.
Another link to movement that could be noted here would be that of geography. Although an architect, mathematician and engineer, Furttenbach seems to attach great importance to the discovery of new territories, their immortalisation and analysis through cartography and texts. This perhaps shows a very diverse aspect of architecture and even questions its definition, scope and field of application. What is the link between these two fields? Do they complement each other?
In a few words, movement can be found in various forms, both explicitly and implicitly, in visual or conceptual form in this work. It is up to the reader to let himself be carried away by it…
Three Key words which can help to understand the main concept : Travel, diversity, activity.
