Contact_232 - Archived Posted on 11/25/201908/11/2020 „The origin of building“ , written by John Wood (1704-1754) is one of the most peculiar book on architecture written in England during the 18th century. It consists of 5 books, each containing between 10 and 15 chapters. The main issue of these 5 books are the rise and progress of building, a description of speculative architecture (of proportion, order and beauty) and a description of the orders of columns and the forms and proportions of temples. In the end of the book, on the last page of 235 pages he wrote a short conclusion which shows that the classic architecture had been revealed to the Jews and incorporated in the temple of Jerusalem.There are 22 illustrations that can be folded up to a larger sheet of paper of some floor plans and columns. The images are very precise drawings made out of plates. Between the text and the images, there is a close link. He emphasizes what he wrote in the text.In addition to these illustrations, the book mainly consists out of text. The dimensions of the book are 400x270x30 mm.
