DESCRIPTION, Bel Colo fig. pag- IJS- Bel Tanteo ■ Pag- Hi- Beautiful Vatican temple. pag- IYR. heresy PREFACE IX Editing every day in difordine the true ancient Architecture for the many licenses, with which not a few moderns disform it Profelfori, I refused to form the prefect of the Treaty to repair rare, fe fia feasible, the deplorable abufo. To this end I take a to describe the three main Orders, Doric, Jonic, and Corinthian fruitful the most famous efemplars of ancient Rome; and finding give them more, and less rich in carving, vary in size, and now-, of a folo, and now mifti of different kinds, each one in Simple, Ornate, and Compofito. The object it is certainly not new, because it was treated by Vitruvius until the time of Augufto, and neither ftri last starch from Serlio, Palladio, and Barozio. Authors all very worthy of praise and praise for this fine art: but new is the divifione, which I propose, for- which differs from all the ufate hitherto, • new the method, which I referred to, because it- moftrative, and reduced in Circles; and finally the practice is new, which I am teaching, because reflected in a fola mifura of Seda, that is to say in a fola Apertura di compalfo. And here it is, ocortefe Reader, the fiftema. There are three main parts, which commonly refer to the Architectural Orders. ture; the Piedeftallo, the Colonna, and the Cornicione, to which you can add them fourth the Supornornate, which the ancients diluted Podio, and we will define it with the names of Parapet- to, and Balauftrata. Each of those parts divides into three models, namely: the Foot- phthallus in bafamento, fpecchio, and frame; the column in bafe, fufto, and capital; the Lintel cornice, frieze, and crown; and the Supornornato as the Piedeftallo, concai has great relationship. All the redeemed fi moldings finally divide into members of four different figures: and phono planes, round, concave, emidi. Pianili diphinguish in abacuses, fafee, drips, and liftelli; the Rotondi in altragals, collars, ovoli, e_, bulls; i Concave in cables, feozie, fcanalature & c. . the Mifti in the throat straight and reverberates, in imo, and fommo fcapo, and file them. In addition to those there are some members, who appear they particularly care about each Order; like the metopes, and trilifi, which he complains year place in the Doric; the volutes, and dentils, which precisely fit the Jo- nico; and the leaves, and modiglioni, which make Corintio's ornaments. Cofe all necelfarie a faperfi, and then one by one outlined in the Drawings, and referred to in the an- tteffe Tables, where you can reconcile them. This premelfo as a preliminary of the prefect fiftema, paflo to decrypt the differences forms of the Orders, and the new practice of operating with a fola Apertura di compalfo. Four in all, as we have seen above, are the main parts of each Or- dine, and four likewise are the ways in which each of them can divergely form marli, that is to say: with a simple column and cornice; with the addition of a foot ftallo; with ornate parapet cover; and with a parapet, and a footwell together. Venen- therefore give to the operation you will do so: of whatever fort he vials, you will divide the height-, of the Order in fei Equal opening of compalfo, each of more and less models, such as thinned out; and wanting to make them in the first form, you will give them an Aperture ej half to the cornice, and capital together, and four and a half to the rest; in the conda, one on the cornice, four on the whole column, and one on the pedestal; in the third, two on the parapet, cornice, and capital together, and four on the redo; in the fourth, one and a half to the parapet, and cornice, three and a half to the whole column, and one to the footftal- lo, Quefta diribribuzione, and quantity of Aperture is not my find, as forfè you will imagine, but the one and the other view polle in ufo in the famous Amphitheater of Titus, say X commonly called them Cololfeo, in which nothing is done in cafo, and all with Geometric trans- I will admirably throw diofofto. Neither does this rule reflect the elevation of the Orders, but it still ferries for the_. the structure of their main moldings, making me successful in applying it so much to the bodies niches, as for footwells, and parapets; indeed to the bafi, and Medefimi capitals. Dimodo which as with a fola Apertura di compaifo fi forma, and divides entirely into fei start the circumference of the circles, so with the phelfa Opening replicated fei times fi shape, and divides each Order of Architecture; and more fenza vary the Sefta point you can ask him all in place, and distribute the plan, and the plan. Ofservane the practice in the Portici, e Lodges, which divides into three genera I have added to each Order, and particularly reflect the rule of the Circles, which in all is Tempre the iftefsa. That method, what a doubt is the most perfect of anything else, because geometric, it is not (side hitherto perceived nor by 'Pro- felfori of art, nor by the Authors, who wrote it, • and yet we have cleared the efem- pious in the Elliptical Plan of the Cololfeo, in the spherical of the Panteo, and in the square of the Tem- pious Vatican: the first formed with four circles, the fruitful with five, and the third-, with fei; and all regulated by a same Opening of Seda, as you will see in their de- feritone polla at the end of the Opera by conclufione of the prefect Treaty. OR- DORIC ORDER TAKEN FROM THE MOST FAMOUS FACTORIES OF ANCIENT ROME, 1 OF THE DORIC ORDER His Origin, and Division, Arias sound the opinions over the origin of this Order; many ne_. they give honor to our Italy, and claim that Ita flato vato by the Order Tofcano, and that that, because the most fempli- ce, and fchietto, fìa the first, from which as from source the other they reconstitute their principle to you. Others then, and forfè with more it is said that Greece is the inventor, and I want- not that a certain Doro Prince of Peloponelo folfe the first Author. calling him Doric from his name. Chechefia of the was antiquity, which I let others decide, and of the Order. Tofcano, which I set aside, like that of which no Roman factory finds, whereupon they draw the true mifures and their own form; paflo to refer the Order Doric, diftinto in Simple, Ornate, and Compofito, and to moflrare of all three proportions, and parts. Let's start from the first. or- DORIC ORDER. Simple Doric order. Uefto, which you see in your favorite Difegno, is the Doric Order faithfully prefo tea from the famous Teatro di Marcello, and filmed in the background teeth for your beautiful simplicity. The Barozio, otherwise called the Vi- gnola in the famous Treaty of Architecture declared he had co- liked the idea; but then it altered too modestly the models of cornice, and the shape of the capital changed at all. I re- returned to my own ephemeral, and I formed the two prefects Pro- wires; the first is the original, as it is in the column, and with the teeth in cornice; the fruitful is the copy made by me, fishing line the ornament of those to make make it more simple, and with the addition of the bafe to accommodate me to the modern UFO. The fua height is divided into fei Complement openings, each of models 3. p. I. which in all no models 20. An Opening and a half has a cornice with a capital, and four and a half za the redo of the column with the fua bafe. The frieze deserves special mention two Profiles, having the metopes equally large, and perfectly square, like it requires the indecipherable rule of that Order, although they are of a different height; for- that the one fi ifures with the capital of the Trilifo, and the other fenza. Warn that the modolo fi it divides into thirty parts, and Tempre is the medefimo in all Orders; the rest is clear for feffo, and has no need for explanation. You have DORIC ORDER. the H See the Doric Profile of the Teatro di Mar- cello: in that prefent you outline in large the main parts, that is: Cornicione, Capitello, and Baie. Starting therefore from the first, you will divide the ^ fua height in Aperture fei of compact each of parts twenty; An opening and a half of it you will give to the architrave, two and a half to the frieze with the capital of the trilifo, and two to the crown. Your particular members are described in the following facade. In the Hello way, you will form the capital, which you will divide into openings of various parts five each, which in all make a whole modolo. An opening will make one for the top and a half for the abacus, two for the ovolo and steps, and one and a half for the frieze. Que- the payment does not correspond to the rules of Vitruvius; but those make the UFO fruitful of the Greeks, and not of the Romans, who changed them, where it seemed to them in favor, and efpediente. La Bafe, which fiegue, properly called Attica, is common to all Or- dini. The Serbian applies it particularly to the Doric, but is deceived, because the ancient Ar- chitetti most of the time, not to mention Tempre, they did not give him any Cake, ei modern foli ve the year added. By following this method you will form it in the medium following: you will divide your height into Aperture fie of compact parts five each, as you made me in the capital; an Opening you will give to the upper bull, one and a half to ■ fcozia with your lifts, one and a half to the lower bull, and two to the plinth. The redo c diftin- noticeably noted in the Table, which fiegue, where I have chicken by order does not give the height, e I do it, but still the names of each member. Warn, that the defense of the projections fi takes Tempre from the center of the Columns, and meeting them more numbers, as in the le, ovoli, and gradetti, the first is Tempre the closest to the center. I added, and outlined in the prefect Difegno some common members to the modina- ture of every Order, which do not make them to cafo, and as fuol say them by eye, but with_. was a geometric rule. The first is the straight Gorge, which encloses it inside a square perfect, and forms with the fourth part of the circumference of two opposing Circles, which year for center the eftremi of the ab line The fruitful is the reverberating Gorge, which contains de in a square fefquialtero, and fifa with the part of the circumference of two Circles oppose, which year your centers on cd The third is Scotland, which divides it into a cable upper, and lower, • the upper fi forms with the fourth part of the circumference of a. Club, which has as its center and. , and the lower part of another Circle, which has the center in f. I do not speak of the Taurus outlined lòtto la (cozia, because the fuo contour fi conolcej clearly in his own figure, and has no need for explanation. DORICA TABLE I. ORDER DORIGO. 9 The Ufo de 'Piedeftalli was invented by' maeftri d'Architettura for infrequent growth me, and for the ornament of the columns: and continued they still fervently for bafamento of the Edifìcj, as seen in the Temple of Fortune, and for the parapet of the loggias, me in the fruitful, and third floor Coloffeo. The fue mifure are different, and vary with vary of Orders; I reduced them to the general rule of the slice part of the whole- tezza, that is to say, an Apertura di compact, which fi fuddide later in other fei, ej an opening and a half fe gives it to the bafamento, three and three quarters to the mirror, and the others three quarters to the frame. This being said, the prefect Doric Foot-phthallus was now obtained attfa the fudetta rule riefce with the perfectly square mirror; corrifpon- figure tooth to the fodezza of such Order. You will see the rectum clearly defcrit- in your table. In that same Defense I also outlined the Overornate of the Basins lauftrate, or railings, which, in order not to see any of them in ancient times Factories, two-sided believe it to be a find of the times. He is certain, that they do a great deal vagueness, and polle in ufo in its place make noble, and compact amateur. It is composed- gono dipilaftrini together, and balustrades; the first phono petioles are small in all to the ancient Acroterj, which as you see in the Difegno, place them in ephtremity, albeit sometimes they still replicate in the middle; the fruitful then form a type of column you made pyramid shapes and framed in various shapes with fua bafe, body, and capital; which fi stand in regular distance between one pilaftrino, and the other, and fi form in the following way. You will divide the whole height of the Sopraornato, or fia parapetto in Aperture fei of compact; one and a half you will give to the bafamento, one to the frame, and three and a half ^ to the fpecchio de 'pilaftrini. That mifura of the mirror still lashes with that of the balau- ftri, in which an Opening and three quarters will have the body, three quarters the bafe, and one the wayside Shrine . I do not speak of particular members, lafcando the good owl of the Projectors train them as they please. Rella now accede to the Impofta, or fia lintel frame, which forms it with the chitrave together, and crown of the Cornices, and fowl in opera fotto the Arches riefce of a excellent ornament. Some not very well-known, and less intent on derna, when we have a clear example in the ancient Temple believed to be the cordia to the roots of! Capitol. As an imitation I have one for each. Doric Order Comporto. 'Order that you call them is not particular, nor of a fo! A_. fpecie, as the authors are falsely imagined, that year so far; but it is common to all Orders, and is distinguished in diverfi genres. There is the Doric compofito, the Ionico compofito, the compo- fito Corintio, - and the Doric can join them to the Corintio Order, and Jonico; l'Jonico all ' Doric Order, and Corinthian; and ii Corinthian to the Ionic Order, and Doric. Of those fei I have chosen three, which are certainly the best, because the Order enters each of them Corintio, which is doubtful for your wealth and venuftà brings pride among all. i2 DORIC ORDER. Q Uefto first, which you see is obtained from a small temple built above that of Fauftma, in the Foro Boario, today called Campovaccino. Bramante grand maeftro of Architecture he reputated him for a chief doperà, nor fapea faziarfi to praise him fiend- me jed admire it: olìcrvaJo still carefully, and you will come in the same medium- chin. The mifures were not made before I took place, because the building was not at all different. ruthless and defoliated, but neither do they reconcile the veftigj. The famous Labacco, before perule, I defend the plant, and the view with great accuracy, and in your book delie Antichità di Roma defrizes all its parts, and lafò memory to 'Poderi. I I fervently wholly diluted, and takes some moderation in height, e Iporto of the cornice to accommodate him to the prefect fiftema, I formed the two prefects Frofin, the first with its decorated with balusters, and the fruitful with the addition of the feet. the. L Opening of compaffo is of modoli y. in both, and the distribution of the f U £ j parts and entirely decrypted in the here watered Difegno. IN that Cornicione sees all the Doric maison, and all the beauty, in wonder lezza Corintia: large members, noble carving, and simple modiglioni fon tutti cofe, which make it admirable, and carefully anyone who observes it. La fua al- tezza fi divides in fei openings of compaffo each departments 2 y., an opening and a half-, it has the architrave, two the frieze fenza the capital of the trilifi, and two and a half the remaining of the crown. Warn that in the frieze the metopes, and trilifiers create the fifth part over the_. ordinary mifura, both in height and in width; in which the excellent Architect has ufato a fommo artifice, because not folo with this has filled the entire compartment of the frieze, but he has found a way of joining two defective columns with the jungle Hypatius of a whole malice between them; when in the prefect cafo in that order it cannot effere greater than_> half a fola. Ap; 0 RD DORI In that Difegno you preferred a fertile capital limile to the antecedent in the fu- perior, and adorned with leaves in the lower part. It was found among the fragments of Antiquities Romane, as reported by Serlio; and I do it, as you will see in the progress of the Opera, where it falls into acconcio, and when required by the rules of the prefect fillema. His height in all rigor is of a form and three quarters, but to remove the accomodo de rotti "that would meet, 1 I reduced to a modolo, and parts twenty-four, and footsteps Opening of nine-part compalfo. Three Aperture fi will, as in the other, give the city mala, abacus, and ovolo; half alli gradetti, and two and a half to the leaves. The PiedeftaJIo, which fiegue, is aito modoli five, and fi divides into fei Aperture di compalfo each of twenty-five parts; the diffusion is the phelfa (lability in the 9 card rule. Because nothing is missing from the prefect Compofito Order, I added the Sottobafe, which it circled all around the temple mentioned, and made it a noble bafamento. Not he can praise ballanza for his graceful, and perfect phimetry; the height is two models, and fi still divides elf into Aperture fei, each of ten parts. An opening and a half has the plinth; two the plinth, and bull; one Icozia co fuoi liflelii, and one and a half go- the superior with the rest. The particular miluias are noticed with the letters, like the others of the capital, and foot-phthallium in the following panel. The ceiling finally, which you see outlined, belongs to a Doric Order compofito remnant found in Albano. The Barozio takes it to the book of Architecture ra; and if you want you can fervirtene, because it has the merit, and united with the prefect Ca- pitello will make an excellent comparison. The first fi forms with Ifolate columns, the fruitful with Pilaftri, and the third with both; of all three I will give from hand to hand elfempj, and the operation will be equally easy and secure; easy, because it is reflected in the fola rule of an opening of com- padó; ficura, because reduced to the perfect figure of the Circles: See it in practice. Starting therefore from the Lodges with Ifolate Columns, I say, that in two ways pedono do them: moon with Arches over the Columns, the other line, and with a cornice cornice., which never ceased to occur was the Medefime. Erigo to the definition of the Corinthian Order, which for the fua vagueness, and nobility rightly holds the first place above the others . I do not speak of your origin, because the door efprella in the name, and we believe in the tradition of the Greeks, and in the tefti- of Vitruvius, a certain Calimachus makes up his cha- pitello full'idea, and resemblance of a vafo, which full of flowers, e green acanthus leaves found he preyed on the fepolcro of a Maiden Corintia. Others, however, are of differing fentimento, and supported at the Sagra Storia (limano, which Solomon places first of all these Order in the Temple of Gerofolima, and from there the model was taken by the craftsmen of Greece, which by changing the palm leaves into those of acanthus, and varying in_, somewhere its phimetry appropriates its invention. Everyone follows the opinion that pleases him, and more Verifìmile seems to him; that I honored the Paleftina, and Corinth palio to efaminare which fofle queft'Ordine in Rome, and diftinguo in Simple, Ornate, and Compofito. I take the first from the Portico del Pantco; the fruitful from the three Columns m Campovaccino, believed to be from the Temple of Jupiter Stator; and the last from the triumphal arch di Tito: all the most magnificent eflemplari of Roman Architecture. or- ninety two CORINTHIAN ORDER. Simple Corinthian Order ■ The famous Tempio del Panteo known today as the Rotonda, or fi confi- deri in the artifice of the figure, or in the richness of the ornament is worthy equally admiring. I reserve the right to write down its phimetry, and the proportions in the end of this Opera, and now I stop for a while to undermine the Columns of the Portico, which are simple, and small for what suited to the Corinthian nobility, they formed it entirely, and no . I made two Profiles in the prefect Difegno; the first as it is fi finds in the original fuo; the fruitful accommodated to the general rule of the Columns, who phono fenza lined with balusters, and added fenza of footwell, but with short folo nicione, and sometimes with fottobafe to give them greater ease, and venuftà. Uephto which I am referring to you is the Corinthian Order prefo from the three Columns which however they remain intact from the famous Temple of Jupiter Stator in Campovaccino, and by common agreement of the intendants fi reputa 1 ' the best work, and most perfect in this kind, works. I chose it between all the others to be an example of the ornate Corinthian Order, and I have mati the three following Defegni, the first with the whole Profile, and the others two with large parts. The mifures all correspond to those of the original, referring to a small fminuimento given at the height of the Order, which nulh takes away from your proportion, and makes it conform to our filter. For J 96 CORINTHIAN ORDER. For my fruitful modern info of this Corinthian Order I have trained the two subsequent Profiles, one with the added addition of the foot-phallus, and the other with the provided of balusters. Both years the same height, which divides it into Aperture fei of com- paffo, each of models 4. p. 24. and the distribution is the fielfa of the other Profiles of like that. The more is noted in your figure, nor does it need declaration greater . t CORINTHIAN ORDER. 97 TN that fruitful Defense I put your eyes on the Cornicione, and Capi- tello of the two skilled Profiles. The height of the cornice divides it into Aperture fei di compact, each of twenty-four parts. An opening and three quarters has the architrave, equally the frieze, and two and a half the crown; the rest is deicritto with all efattez- za in your table. The capital is a little less than half of the cornice; this does not oflante it marvelously in vagueness, and in the genus it has no equal. It is divided into the upper part, and lower, each of Aperture three of compact, and each Aperture of pn of a model. , e di Urba- no Vili.
