When I first started reading the book I didn’t know what to expect. Starting with a letter addressing Monsieur Le Marquis de Marigny I thought this book would be some kind of a story talking about how Pierre Patte started his career as an architect and the experiences he made during his work. Against my expectations the book became much more informative and guiding after the short letter. It seemed like Pierre Patte was trying to teach everything he knew. Thats why I chose the word Knowledge as my concept.
The book is divided in eight chapters. Each of these chapters have several articles. For instance, the first chapter is about villages. In the following articles he could be talking about how do villages result or what is the best way to organize a city. In addition to the Articles there could be a paragraph in which he would talk about disposition and decoration of the village.
The next chapter is about general rules in architecture and consist of just one article. The third chapter is an introduction for a young men into architecture and into constructing a house. It consists of 9 articles and lots of paragraphs. It is pretty detailed and very informative because he explains step for step what is important for the construction of the house. He starts off with the materials needed, goes over to how to built every elect and then finishes with how to verify everything built.
In the following Chapters he talks about how to build special buildings like Churches and gives a few examples and plan drawing as reference. These can take up 3-4 Pages and give the reader a pause of the intense text. He also talks about how to build bridges and gives various examples to illustrate the construction. To list up everything he talks about would be too much but as you can see the book explores different topics of architecture and is like a guide where you can find everything you need. The fact that the book is structured like a code of law makes it very clear and easy to read. And although the book goes very much into detail and gets complicated at one point its very convenient and practical to have all this information in one book while its being sorted very strictly. It is for sure a book that could teach something to every architect and person trying to become an architect.
