General Subject of the book:
The subject of my book is, as the title suggests about fortifications in Europe.
Nicolas de Fer is showing with this book how fortifications can be built and how
different cities in Europe did build their fortifications. The first section are
illustrations of Elements of fortifications and where they can be used, and the
rest of the book are illustrations/plans of European Cities and sometimes an analysis
of their fortification.
Organization of the Book:
The book are actually 8 “volumes” in one book, but they work more like chapters rather than independent books. As each volume is about the same topic and there is no visible distinction between each volume (the different countries are mixed in the volumes for example), they are structural elements and not content-wise. At the beginning of the book, there is an alphabetical Index for each City and where to find it in the book (e.g. “6.112” -> volume 6 page 112).
Size of the book
The book is 310mm, has a width of 400mm and a height of 50mm, which makes the
book a “folio” in standard book sizes.
Total number of pages and total number of illustrations
The book has a total of 181 pages and except for the titles of each volume, the index and a few blank pages there is an illustration on every page, so there are about 170 illustrations.
