Friends with an Old Book Task 2 – Argument
L’art d’appareil is a book written in French in 1756. Finding any information about the book or the author was quite a struggle maybe because it is already very old. Therefore, I am going to focus on the title and the rare things a was able to translate.
The Title “l’art d’appareil” means as much as the art of the device. It is also mentioned in the title which people should or could be interested in it. It even says on the first page, that this art is an essential part for all architects, entrepreneurs, etc…
The first chapter is supported by one of the beautiful drawings right away and it is about the “corne de vache”, which means as much as cow horn. In the drawing one can then see a form resembling a cow horn but constructed perfectly by hand on paper. This scheme is followed through the whole book. There are different types of drawings explained and shown, in order to being able to draw these forms perfectly.
The following chapter is about specific sorts of doors, and again their specific construction by hand. This door is explained in different scenarios such as a round wall for example.
There are several more aspects talked about in the book such as cellar descents in various directions and different types of arches.
The book makes a very formal impression on me, and I think it was a pretty good book to learn constructions of challenging forms at that time.
TASK 4 – Comment Aurèle Schaub
The main thing connecting this book to mine is the year of its publishment, this being 1756. However this book wasn`t published in Italy like mine but instead in France.
The books start in a similar way with both of them containing beautiful drawings, the difference being the subject. While this book is about the “corne de vache” mine shows only architecture.
Later this book joins the subject of architecture but it goes more in depth by showing specific parts like the door and their construction.
I think the main difference is the message the books are trying to give.
While my book “le antichità romane” is trying to show the people architectural structures and buildings in all of their glory with the method of some very nice hand drawings. This book is more educational by showing how difficult things can be drawn, kind of being a guide.
