Friends with an old book, Task 2
The full title of my book is “Parallèle de l’architecture antique avec la moderne content”. The title basically says what one can find in this book, the parallels between antique and modern architecture. Specifically, this book defines who to use the five orders in a modern context while keeping in mind what was done before. It gives a guideline for modern architects on how to act.
It is comprised into 2 parts. These parts are split between several authors and also several distinct components of the overarching themes for the specific part. For easier access there is a exact list of contents after the “preface”.
The book includes several illustrations. Most are schematic drawings of things like columns, the buildup of classic facades and everything that comes with it. The pictures have no coloration but they convey the message of the distinct proportions and looks.
The book is quite thick with a thick leather binder. The pages are sized in between an a4 and an a5. While its thick the relatively small page size makes it easily portable. In my opinion this makes it more practical. This also makes it easier to apply the content to real life buildings.
The Book is written by Charles Antoine Jombert. He came from a family of booksellers which he also made his profession. He specialized in books for the military and also acted as the royal bookseller. Later he expanded the variety of books he traded and started to sell all around Europe.
