Christoph Leonhard Sturm is the author of the book “Vollständige Anweisungen, alle Arten von Kirchen wohl anzugeben». He has studied and after that he taught at a university the subject’s mathematics and architecture. His focus was on the construction of civil and military buildings.
In this book he has explained the differences of the churches. The title indicates that the churches should be precisely and completely distinguished. Every church has his own character, and these characteristics are shown very good in the book.
The book has like two parts. The first part of the book is more theoretically. He put a lot of this own notes into the book and some calculations. After that he concentrated on the different types of churches. In this part there are a lot of plans, elevations and sections of the different churches.
This book is for persons, who are interested in architecture. How the churches are constructed and how they look like. As the title suggests, the book is a kind of instruction. People how are interested in architecture can read this and apply it directly to their work. I like that Sturm combines the theoretical part with plans, sections and elevations. In this way, he reinforces his statement and clears up possible misunderstandings.
The book “Vollständige Anweisung, alle Arten von Kirchen wohl anzugehen» is really thin. The format is a bit bigger than an A4, quite special. It would maybe be nice, if he had explained also other buildings like apartments and residential houses.
