„De gli obelischi di Roma“ by Michele Mercati is a book about the obelisks of Rome. It has a length of 246 mm, breadth of 185 mm and a depth of 48mm. This measures can be seen as part of the standard size of books during the period of publishing (1589). In total it contains 399 pages full of text, whereby it needs to be said, that there is an alphabetical appendix with 40 more pages at the end of the book. Illustrations are very rare, in fact there is only one at the first page. However ornaments are more frequent. Every chapter begins with an artful adorned initial (first letter of the first word in a chapter). After several blank pages the introductory page which contains the title and the described illustration is followed by a preface. It is written by Michele Mercati, the author of the book and starts on page two. The letters are of larger size than those of the text in the rest of the book. After three other introductory parts by other authors there can be found a list of all 44 chapters, which the book contains. A register of all authors that are quoted can be found directly before the first chapter „Capitolo primo“. The last one ends with the words „Il FINE“ and is followed as mentioned by an alphabetical appendix. It is captioned with the words: „Table by alphabet of the most notable things that are contained in this work“.
