I first tried to input war as a topic and look for terms like “defence structure” or “architect”, but I wasn’t very successful: the only books I managed to see a link with were “Schrater, 3D History Theory and Aesthetics of the Transpla” and “Twemlow, Sifting the Trash A History of Design Criticism” both books that somewhat have to do with architecture, but the title didn’t inspire enough to pursue this probably subtle at best connection.
So, I switched my focus from war to defence and to my surprise I found more than I expected: In “Marx, collected works” it seems like there are references to architecture, but the book title seems too broad, however in “Hugo, Les Misérables” there are various references to architecture throughout the stakeout at the bastille which is closely tied to renaissance defence techniques described in “Architectura Militaris”. This, together with other Architects used as plot devices, seems to suggest a good connection that I would want to explore.
So, I continued my research, this time I entered maps as the topic, since “Architectura Militaris” has a lot of maps drawn so the connection would very much interest me.
I first looked for Medieval and Dungeon & Dragons, because these are the first things that come to my mind as map relevant. This strategy didn’t bring me too much since I ended up only Maths and Theosophy related topics. So, I looked for cartographer and the results were somewhat more promising: Deleuze Guattaris “A Thousand Plateaus” first caught my eye with cartographic and architectural references, but later it set itself to be a chemistry compendium. Finally then after minutes of scrolling, I found “Quantum City” from Hovestadt Buehlmann ( an ETH published book0 that on further investigation brought a very concise connection with maps and Architecture as a whole.
