For the 3rd Task of friends with an old book I used my knowledge about “The Villas of the Ancients Illustrated” by Robert Castell from the second task to search for similar topics in the “Alice” search engine.
At first, I searched for the two villas Castell describes in his book, so the one at Laurentum and the one at Tuskulum. By doing that I recognised that these are ancient Villages outside Rome where the high society used to have big villas and not only Pliny the Younger. But most of the found phrases were just quoted and just one sentence long so not very useful.
By searching for “Tuskulum” using Alice`s Architecture Library Brain I found the book “The Architecture of Luxury” by the author Annette Condello published in 2014. In her book she pictures the evolution of luxury in architecture and the sense for it in every century. For the ancient style she refers and describes some villas in Tusculum.
After tipping in “roman villas” using again the architekture library I came across “A Companion to Roman Architecture” by Roger B Ulrich. The book describes the art of roman building, the style and techniques under the historical aspects of policy, culture etc through different roman centuries. These different chapters are discussed by different authors, where I see the parrels with Robert Castell as he refers to the description of Pliny the Younger. Furthermore in both books a lot of plans are mentioned to picture the location of the buildings in their surrounding area, which was very important.
