I had a rather difficult start getting myself acquainted with AskAlice. For the search in AskAlice I used the Xenotheka library.
I began by rereading my Argument from the last task. In that post I often used the words “portal”, “entrance” and “illustration”.
In the context bar I entered the word architecture. As for the search terms I entered the above, starting with “portal”. But my search with these terms came to dead ends.
By using the authors name Wendel Dietterlin as search term I came across the word “ornament”, which I hoped to be the break. I felt that ornament described my book just a well as the other terms.
I came across multiple quotes that really caught my interest including this one: “A building consists of a structural frame (‘ossature’) and infillings (‘remplissage’); ornament as decoration is not permitted the function of ornament is taken over by the structural elements.” By Hanno Walter Kruft.
As for my first book I decided to choose “A History of architectural Theory : from Vitruvius to the present” written by Hanno Walter Kruft. What drew me to this book wasn’t the similarities with mine but rather the opposite. It’s a very theoretical book. Kruft’s opinion is obviously very different to Dietterlins. For him ornament and decorations is rather secondary, if at all. And the discrepancy in architecture is very interesting.
On my search for my second book, I decided to enter the terms “ornament” once again, but this time followed by “drawing” and I also switched from explore to find. I was in a lot of luck and found a very suited book “baroque and Rococo: Architecture and decoration” by Anthony Blunt. The book includes tons of photographs like the illustrations in my book. I found it very interesting to compare the photos and the drawings. My guess is both have similar intentions to show the ornamental beauty in architecture, on the contrary to the first book.
