Architectura de postium seu portalium
The full title of the book is “Architectura de postium seu portalium” written by Wendel Dietterlin. Translated into English it means “Architecture of the post and portal”. The Title reveals what the book is about already.
The book has no list of content, nor does it have chapters. It has a total of 160 pages. The book is normal size for a non-fiction book but very thin when one knows the number of pages. That is due to the thinness of the paper used. It has about four pages of writing which I can only assume is about the upcoming content of the book. Although before the text, there’s a picture, which I interpret as an old-fashioned cover, because the book is only covered in a beautiful leather binding.
The following pages of the book are a collection of beautiful illustrations of portals and entrances. Every single one of the illustrations are different and show portals with incredible details and ornaments. It reminds me a lot of cornices. Only on every second page is there an illustration.
I think the book was made to impress with the number of illustrations. But also, to visualize the greatness of portals.
In my option it’s a beautiful book. The illustrations are very impressive and very inspiring. It’s a great book to reach for, when building an entrance or when having to draw one, like the “urban entrance” task. So, I would say the book was made for architects and artists.
